We have represented many of the local communities and villages in the region that do not have their own engineering staff. Many of these relationships date back to the 1950's or earlier. These long standing relationships have allowed our company and the municipality to assemble a detailed inventory of infrastructure mapping, records of platting, annexation, right of ways, easements and street vacation as well as a general knowledge and history of each community's soil types, drainage patterns and age of and deficiencies in infrastructure. This knowledge is very important and helps avoid unwanted surprises during construction projects. All of our records are digitally scanned and all files are backed up on a daily basis. We are also the Engineers of Record for many of the area villages original water and wastewater systems involving supply, distribution, storage, collection and treatment.

Some of the area communities we have represented as City Engineers include: Clark's Grove, New Richland, Ellendale, Geneva, Hartland, Brownsdale, LeRoy, Waldorf, Waltham, Conger, Glenville, Rose Creek, Freeborn, Twin Lakes, Emmons, Easton, Manchester, Lansing and Myrtle. We also design and perform municipal engineering for the cities of Owatonna, Albert Lea and Austin on a routine basis.

While we are not the largest firm in the region, even large engineering companies do not specialize in every facet of the broad field of civil engineering. We have the flexibility to partner with specialized firms as needed and have done so on many past projects. We believe our involvement in these partnerships leads to a more streamlined project with better focus on detail, client concerns and reduced costs than otherwise would be.

We have been involved with the roadway and utility design and construction management of may Trunk Highway and County State Aid Roadway Improvements throughout the area. Some recent area projects include:

We have also performed numerous municipal designs for non-cost share improvements where funds are provided through loan or grant dollars, special assessments to benefiting property owners or City reserve funds. Structural Engineering

We also provide structural engineering for post frame buildings, foundation design and miscellaneous steel, concrete and wood analysis for use in structural applications.

 

Agricultural, Hydraulic & Hydrologic Engineering & Storm Water Management

JHS has provided engineering services on approximately 150 different County Drainage projects in Freeborn and surrounding counties, including but not limited to surveys, hydraulic and hydrologic analysis, surface profile and discharge determination for various return periods, designs for capacity, estimates of cost, bidding, construction staking and project administration  These designs span over approximately 215 miles of waterway in Freeborn County alone.

We are also the Engineer of Record for the Turtle Creek Watershed District, a 100,000 acre watershed in Freeborn and Mower Counties and we currently provide the majority of engineering services for the Shell Rock River and Cedar River Watershed Districts including the current design of a 15 million gallon retention and wetland basin for Albert Lea’s South Industrial Park.
We are a very green company and through our association with (3) local watershed districts have been able to implement many environmentally sensitive and innovative practices including detention basins, wetlands, forebays, rain gardens/infiltration basins, bio-swales, filter strips, scour holes and grit interceptors.

JHS also provides hydraulic and hydrologic analysis of roadway crossings for Freeborn and Mower counties, including topographic surveys, watershed determination, design discharge selection and completion of Risk Analysis Certifications to determine the design flood and the overtopping flood.
